What to do with my free time?
Let's say you are fed up with social media, and you decide to quit. Cool, but now what? Suddenly there is a margin of time when you have to think about something to do. It's less about the time you've saved from scrolling social media but more about the period before that time. Social media is mindless, you open Twitter, and it just feeds you, there is no thought involved or intention.
But what do you do when you have that time available to do something else? As I said, it may be that you only scroll Twitter for 3 minutes or something, but now you have 3 minutes to do something, and you have to think... "What do I do?" I guess some people already have it figured it out, they will go directly to that thing they want to make or watch or read. But in my case I am left wondering, I probably wonder what to do more than I browse social-media. Now, let's be clear, I don't like social media, and I'm not an addict — So a lot of this doesn't apply to social-media addicts, those guys have an issue.
I don't know, I don't have to explain why social-media equals bad. I guess I'm just kind of envious of people who know what they want to do, I'm sure you've met them or got to see at least one of them; as soon as they can, they start working on something or watching anime or movies. I watch anime, I have a website I can work on, I have two blogs — and of course there are many "new things" I can try. But it's hard for me to try and do anything... except writing these, these are so easy to do. Maybe the microblog was a good idea!
You know, talking about that, why social media? In there you get a sense of being seen, it's vapid, and it means nothing, but your superficial thoughts get seen and liked and shared. Look at my blog and website... how do I know that anyone has ever seen it? It's okay, it doesn't matter if I am just talking with the air. Believe it or not, I talk with myself a lot, so there's not much of a difference. Bearblog has that updoot feature; people can updoot your post. At least if they do, you get to know someone has read it... maybe.
Maybe this comes out of nowhere but... I think everyone wants to monetize everything. I don't like it, it doesn't feel right. It's like if I start pay-walling my post despite the fact that apparently no one reads them. Acknowledging that I am here is already enough of a payment. Social media has made us believe the story of a dream... a dream where everyone can become rich by playing by the algorithm. That's obviously a lie, most of us, humans, we are nobodies. Just deciding to give me, a nobody, your attention is more than enough, if you are reading my ramblings then I appreciate it.
I want to find more blogs and more people and more things by people who seem to know this reality. The thing is, I know that maybe I'm just a special case of someone who wants to keep talking despite not knowing if I'm being seen or not. It is possible that someone else may not be so inclined, they may start a blog very happy, but then they are going to forget about it because it isn't giving them any tangible feedback. It is then that they go to social media, where there's a lot of feedback that means nothing.
I'm being selfish here, but if you do have a blog or a website... please don't stop posting. Sometimes I follow people's RSS feeds, and they vanish — never to be seen again. Whatever, I kind of got sidetracked...
Uhm... What is it that I was going to do? I forgot.
